In the 2024 Election (or Any Election) Vote Biblically, Not Politically

by Pastor Jim Feeney, Ph.D.

Summary:  The 2024 USA elections will soon be upon us. [Full disclosure: I am a registered Independent voter. In this article I will not refer to candidates or political parties. My full focus will be on issues.] For those who value God’s Word the Bible, my desire is to offer information to inform your vote by Scripturally addressing some of the major issues our nation is facing today. My hope and prayer is that God’s Word, not politics, will be the determining factor as voters make their decisions in our upcoming elections. May our Lord give you His always-perfect wisdom.

I have written this article with the upcoming USA elections in mind. But the biblical principles are timeless and apply to you voters in all the nations of the world. May God bless and guide you.

God is pro-law and order. Vote for those who oppose lawlessness in all its forms.

Many major American cities have become like war zones. Law-abiding residents are cowering in fear, and many are fleeing, some permanently. Buildings are being burned. Looting of stores has become common. Violent individuals, who are often parts of protesting mobs, are ruling the streets of many cities, while cowardly governmental officials restrict law enforcement officers’ abilities to control the law breakers.

This chaos was prophesied 2,000 years ago by Jesus Christ. Speaking to His disciples about signs of the end times, Jesus said that “lawlessness will be increased” (Matthew 24:12, ESV). Christ’s words are coming true before our very eyes. The apostle Paul likewise spoke of those who would “in the last days … [be] relentless (admitting of no truce or appeasement) … uncontrolled and fierce” (2 timothy 3:1-3, AMPC Bible). Thankfully, in the face of this we have God’s Word declaring His law enforcement position: “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right” (1 Peter 2:13-14).

Many American cities are sliding into unrestrained chaos. Vote biblically. Vote for proven law-and-order candidates who will honor the God-given rights of our citizens to live safely and securely.

God is pro-life. Vote for those who honor the sanctity of life.

The Bible calls Jesus “the author of life (Acts 3:15). God told His chosen people Israel, “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life” (Deuteronomy 30:19). We serve a life-affirming God! Yet tens of millions of innocent American babies have been executed in the womb since the infamous Roe-Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. Thankfully, and with much praise to God, on June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overruled the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling and declared that there is no right to an abortion written anywhere in the U.S. Constitution. That Court decision returned the matter to the 50 individual states, where it constitutionally belongs.

The Scriptures undeniably reveal God as pro-life, as the author of life and the protector of earth’s most innocent of all beings, the unborn in the womb. Please, from the depths of my heart I appeal to you, vote for those who will honor God’s pro-life standards. For your further, in-depth investigation of this biblical topic, I have written these articles:

God is
pro-church. Vote for those who honor & support the First Amendment’s free-exercise-of-religion guarantee.

Matthew 16:18  …I [Jesus] will build my church.

Ephesians 3:21
To Him [to God] be glory in the church…

Ephesians 5:25
…Christ loved the church. He gave up His life for her.

God the Father loves the world so much (John 3:16) that He sent Jesus His Son to earth to die on the cross to bear the sins of mankind. And Jesus loves His redeemed Church so much that “He gave up His life for her.” God the Father and His Son Jesus paid the supreme price to save lost men and women and incorporate them into the Church and the family of God.

The American Constitution never says to keep the Church shackled and out of the public arena. What the First Amendment does do is forbid Congress from making any laws either to establish religion or to prohibit the free exercise of religion. The Bible, along with the U.S. Constitution, makes it abundantly clear that the government is to keep its hands off the church! It is very important that you vote for candidates who fully support the “free exercise” of religion clause of the First Amendment, exactly as the Bible does.

God is pro-nuclear family. Vote for those who support the traditional family.

Genesis 1:27-28  So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth…

God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1) and the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. He brought them together and “blessed them” (the first marriage) and told them to bear children and thereby begin the long process of populating the earth. The pattern from the beginning — a father, a mother, and their children — is the pattern God reveals throughout Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. The Bible knows no other God-designed pattern than this clear definition of the traditional family. That is God’s unchanging plan from the beginning.

Forces are at work in our nation, attempting to redefine and even to destroy the nuclear family — father, mother, and children. The traditional biblical family, as created by God, is at the very heart of any prosperous, God-blessed society. In the upcoming election, I urge you to vote for candidates who support the traditional family and who oppose efforts to destroy it and replace it with man-made alternatives that will erode the very fabric of our society.

God is pro-traditional marriage. Vote for those who honor this very first divine institution.

In the previous section we looked at God’s definition of family. Now let’s narrow our focus and look specifically at God’s definition of marriage. Some Pharisees were confronting Jesus on the topic of divorce in the Bible. In reply, Jesus turned their attention (and ours) onto the Genesis account of the first marriage, which we have looked at briefly above. Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife’…?” (Matthew 19:4-5)

Jesus had a remarkable ability to take very important truths and simplify them in words easy to understand. Explaining from Genesis how God had instituted marriage, He said, “…the Creator ‘made them male and female’ … a man … and his wife.” That, and that alone, is the only format for marriage found in the entirety of God’s Bible — a male/man married to a female/wife. The modern acceptance of what many call “gay marriage” or "same-sex marriage" is found nowhere in Scripture. To the contrary, homosexual conduct is broadly condemned in the Bible:

Traditional Marriage? Gay Marriage? Or Both?

Don’t let changing societal customs sway you from voting biblically. It’s not the culture’s place to change the Bible. Rather, it’s Almighty God’s right, expressed in the truths of His Word, to change the culture. Be determined to vote for those who will support God’s biblical definition of traditional marriage of a man and a woman.

God created every human as one of two clearly identifiable, unchangeable genders. Vote for those who affirm God’s creative choice in this matter.

One of the crucial issues of our time is the transgender movement. This is a direct contradiction to God’s creative authority. This is clearly shown in the same Scripture (above) where Jesus defined God’s standard for what marriage is. Let’s review that Scripture:

Matthew 19:4  “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’?”

Tragically, men and women, even teens, are going through sex change procedures in a hopeless effort to become something that is the exact opposite of what the Creator God made them to be! I am fully content to be a man, because that’s what the Lord created me to be. My wonderful wife is fully content to be a woman, because that’s what the Lord created her to be. When we twist and pervert anything from Almighty God’s always-perfect patterns and standards, we walk away from the blessings of submission and obedience to Him. Resolve to be biblical, not culture-influenced, on this current hot-button topic. Hold to God’s perfect wisdom in creating each of us unchangeably either male or female. I urge you to vote for candidates who will uphold the Creator God’s gender decisions against the contrary, destructive philosophies of mankind.

God is pro-Israel. His Son Jesus “became flesh and dwelt among us” as a Jew.

This is the last point we’ll look at, but certainly not the least. God’s love for Israel as a people permeates the pages of Scripture. As Moses was leading the nation of Israel from slavery in Egypt toward the Promised Land, God said to that nation, “You are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession” (Deuteronomy 14:2). He told the nation of Israel that He had brought them out of bondage in Egypt “because the Lord loved you” (Deut. 7:8). The Psalmist encouraged us to love and pray for Jerusalem, and by implication the nation — “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they prosper who love you’.” (Psalm 122:6)

Jesus, God’s Son, came to earth by a miraculous divine conception in the womb of a virgin named Mary (Matthew 1:20-21). In His earthly birth, the Bible says, “It is clear that our Lord descended from Judah” (Hebrews 7:14). Jesus, the Savior of the world, as to His humanity was a Jew. These and more Scriptures make it very, very clear that God has a strong love for the nation of Israel.

This may seem like an unusual point to close on. But given God’s great love for the nation of Israel, I encourage you to vote for candidates who respect and support Israel. Ponder that from God’s standpoint, not from a political one.

To Summarize:

If you hold the Bible to be God’s holy, revealed Word, I heartily encourage you to let the Scriptures, not political considerations, motivate your votes. Be sure to vote, and pull the lever or check the box for those men and women that you believe are the most likely to govern or legislate or judge consistent with Almighty God’s revealed positions on important issues of life. We’ve looked at 7 of those divine standards in this article:

• God is pro-law and order

• God is pro-life

• God is pro-church

• God is pro-nuclear/traditional family

• God is pro-traditional marriage

• God creates two clearly-identified, permanent genders

• God is pro-Israel
