Homosexual Conduct? 14 Bible Verses on It

by Pastor Jim Feeney, Ph.D.

Summary:  Homosexuality has become a front-and-center topic in 21st-century American culture. The often-seen LGBTQ+ acronym typically stands for “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or 'Questioning'),” with the “+” added to include other groupings that were not intentionally left out.
Passionate rhetoric flows from all sides of this issue in American culture today. My intention is to add no rhetoric to the debates. My purpose, rather, is simply to set forth — without personal commentary — what the Scriptures of God’s Word, the Bible, say about these issues. From 50 years of personal Bible study I have learned that Almighty God in His Word makes Himself very clear on a host of issues. This is one of them.
I submit these Scriptures — again, without personal commentary, but with bold type to emphasize relevance to the topic — for your sincere consideration of God’s declared position on homosexual conduct as revealed in His written Word, the Bible. God’s moral standards in Scripture do not change with evolving cultures—“I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6, NKJV) and “He never changes” (James 1:17, NLT). I invite you to hear God’s statements in 14 Bible verses on homosexual conduct.

Old Testament Scripture verses on homosexual conduct

Leviticus 20:13  If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

Leviticus 18:22-30  Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable… [29] Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people. Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the Lord your God.

Judges 19:22-23, NLT  ...a crowd of troublemakers from the town surrounded the house. They began beating at the door and shouting to the old man, "Bring out the man who is staying with you so we can have sex with him." The old man stepped outside to talk to them. "No, my brothers, don't do such an evil thing. For this man is a guest in my house, and such a thing would be shameful."

1 Kings 14:24 (KJV)  And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Lord cast out before the children of Israel.

Genesis 13:13  Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.
(New Testament) Jude 7 (TLB)  And don’t forget the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, all full of lust of every kind, including lust of men for other men.

Genesis 19:4-5, 11-13, 24  Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them” … [11] Then [the messengers from God] struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door. The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it” … [24] Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens.

Genesis 18:20-21; 2 Peter 2:6-10  So the Lord told Abraham, “I have heard a great outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah, because their sin is so flagrant. I am going down to see if their actions are as wicked as I have heard. If not, I want to know” … [2 Peter 2:6ff] If he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority.

New Testament Scripture verses on homosexual conduct

Jude 7 (TLB)  And don’t forget the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, all full of lust of every kind, including lust of men for other men. Those cities were destroyed by fire and continue to be a warning to us that there is a hell in which sinners are punished.

Romans 1:21-28  For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened… [24] Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind [KJV: a reprobate mind], so that they do what ought not to be done.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10  Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Timothy 1:9-11  We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

Matthew 19:4-5  “Haven’t you read,” [Jesus] replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’.”
1 Corinthians 7:2  …each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.
