Reflections on the Election (2022): The One Glaring Omission

Summary:  I thought about entitling this article “Prophetic Reflections on the 2022 Election.” But I didn’t, because I’m not a prophet, just a single voice crying in the wilderness. Yesterday (November 8, 2022) was the national and local Election Day in the USA. Final results are still being tabulated. But overall, I would say that the Democratic party is generally happy, and the Republicans are mourning the results. (Full disclosure: I am a registered Independent voter, and I base my votes on biblical values, not on political party or rhetoric.)

Republicans (the GOP) had been predicting a “Red wave” of victories nationally and statewide. Some were expecting even a “tsunami.” The reality? They were greatly disappointed. It was a Red trickle, vastly
underperforming the expected GOP results. Today — the first day post-election — politicians, journalists, TV anchors, and others are sharing their “wisdom” about what happened and why. Almost all of them are missing it totally.

Please grant me a few minutes to hear me out. Some may not like what I say and might exit here. But I’m not going to make the mistake that we saw throughout America in this election cycle, including all the campaigning leading up to the voting. I’m going to identify biblically
why America is going steadily, catastrophically downhill. And these election results are unlikely to do much if anything to reverse that national decline.

Psalm 33:12, KJV  Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.

Proverbs 29:2, KJV  When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

God’s Word, the Bible, is very clear about national prosperity. A nation whose God is the Lord (the God of heaven revealed in the Bible) will be a blessed nation. When that nation’s voters have placed righteous people into places of authority, the people will rejoice. And by “righteous” I refer to people living according to the clear teachings of Holy Scripture. In my lengthy time on this earth (I’m looking at age 80 next spring), I have watched the USA decline from an openly God-fearing, Bible-honoring country into the mostly secular, divided, chaotic nation we live in today.

I personally recall every day in public school beginning with our reciting the Lord’s prayer. No one objected, nor did the courts. Then prayer was taken out of the schools. The same with the Bible. Being “religious” in the public realm was increasingly frowned on. Today very few politicians of either major party openly declare their faith in God and His Word to be the foundation of their own lives and of their functioning in public service.

All of this and more were obvious in this just-finished election cycle. Very few national and statewide candidates were willing to declare boldly a message like this: “My personal values are shaped by my faith and the Word of God. And I will function in my elected role with those faith-based values as my personal core.”

Think of this: how many candidates for public office did you hear using the word repent? Yet when Jesus came to an entire planet lost in its sinful ways, the first word of His biblically recorded public preaching was, “Repent!” — Matthew 4:17 - "From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, 'Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand'." These words came from the Lord and Savior Jesus Himself.

The great prophet John the Baptist echoed the same message to his multitudes of followers, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 3:2). In the closing book of the Bible (in Revelation, chapters 2-3), Jesus sent messages to 7 churches in that latter part of the first century. To five of the seven He commanded, “Repent.” So both unbelievers and believers in the Lord are called to biblical repentance.

Our nation is not going to reverse its downward slide into depravity and godlessness without a heartfelt turn to “repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21, KJV). The first known written governing document in what later became the USA was the November 1620 Mayflower Compact, where the signers openly declared that they had “undertaken [their voyage] for the Glory of God and advancement of the Christian Faith.” America’s early European settlers were very open about their faith in God and Jesus the Son of God. Today if you speak as they did in, say, a typical American college classroom, you would risk being shouted down. Is there an answer? Yes, consider this Scripture:

2 Chronicles 7:14  If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Our land, our beloved nation, needs God’s healing. We are allowing millions of innocent, unborn babies to be savagely executed in the womb. Same-sex marriages are not just legalized, but are societally approved of, in direct contrast to God’s decrees on this. Children are being allowed, and in some cases encouraged, by their parents to have life-altering mutilations done to their bodies in a fruitless attempt to change the gender God Almighty chose for them. In many parts of America today, violence, vandalism, and looting go on routinely, with very little opposition from the police and district attorneys. Sexual immorality is everywhere, unchecked.

If we want God to “heal our land,” let me be clear. The politicians will not do it. Only God Himself can truly heal our land. And He’ll do it only as we humble ourselves to pray, to seek Him, to repent and turn from our wicked ways. THEN He will hear from heaven, forgive our personal and national sins, and heal our beloved land. Here is just a small sample of the ungodliness America needs to repent of. There are many more I could list. I offer links to some biblical answers to these very visible and very destructive contemporary issues in America:

Unrestrained sexual immorality

Hebrews 13:4  God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

Where are the prophets of God today, following the example of the biblical prophets and crying out: “Repent!”? Where are the political candidates willing to campaign on a platform like this? — “Our nation has forsaken God and is reaping the results. Let me join with you in returning to the blessings of God by using my public office to pursue Godly values as revealed in His Word. Let's pray and work together to move America back to the reality of God's promise: 'Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord'.”

Now that’s the type of elected officials who can be a positive influence towards our nation returning to its roots in Almighty God and Jesus Christ His Son, our Savior. Ah, I can just hear the “But, but…separation of church and state” outcries. And the answer to that is simple. That phrase does not occur anywhere in the Constitution. Check it out for yourselves. But here's what does occur. The U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment simply states that [Quote]: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” In a nutshell, our Constitution places the restriction on the Congress, requiring it essentially to stay out of either establishing religion or prohibiting the free exercise of religion. The Constitution places no prohibition on an individual person freely exercising his/her faith publicly or privately.

As I stated at the outset, I’ll repeat at the end. I’m not a prophet, but just a single voice “crying in the wilderness” for a national return to the God of the Bible, so that we may once more joyfully say, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

The talking pundits, news anchors, and columnists will be reflecting on the recent election. If history repeats itself, they’ll come up with all kinds of human “wisdom” to explain the results. To which I offer the apostle Paul’s inspired words: “The wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight” (1 Corinthians 3:19).

Look to God and His Word the Bible for answers and for the timeless truths we all need in order to see America return to being a shining “city set on a hill,” allowing its citizens to fulfill Jesus’ promise that we believers (of all nations) can be the “light of the world” and the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13-14). Our nation’s great days are not over. We can fulfill the prediction I once heard from a great man of God that God can save America. Let’s be involved in that and contribute to that in electing godly leaders who will serve in ways that please the Lord.
