God's Divine Intervention | When He Steps In Powerfully

Summary:  In my lifetime I have witnessed many occurrences of God's miraculous intervention in the lives of human beings — instances where "the heavenly" unmistakably alters "the earthly." What's the meaning of divine intervention? Simply put, it is God Almighty getting directly involved in the lives of human beings. Such spiritual phenomena, while remarkable to us, are routine to God. Let me share with you a number of supernatural events that have greatly impacted my life — and will hopefully encourage you, uplift you, and build your faith to believe God for His divine intervention in your life.

• A Couple of Dramatic Healings

It was the mid-1970s. My wife Mickey and I and several other Christians were participating in evangelistic meetings in a small city in Alaska. At the close of one meeting a woman in our group, who was greatly used by the Lord in miraculous healings, began to pray for the sick. My wife had for some time been having hip pain due to one leg being shorter, which threw off her posture a bit. When this lady prayed over her, that shorter leg instantly and visibly grew longer. My wife let out a shout of surprise and told me later that it felt like the Lord had painlessly stretched her leg like a rubber band, then let go and it stayed at the new length. Her hip pain never recurred!

Mickey was the recipient of another great healing miracle. We had been happily married for six years but were still childless. A few years earlier she had been diagnosed with a specific infertility problem. She would come home from baby showers and weep, because she had been the only woman there without children. Then one day a respected woman of God from our church heard a direct word from the Lord, which she related to us. It said, "Your barren days are over!" A year after that word the first of our children was born! Today I am blessed to say that Mickey bore us three more children, all now adults and serving the Lord. God's timing was perfect, and our four children and six grandchildren [2022 edit: 12 grandchildren] continue to be a source of immense blessing to me in these, my senior years. God still heals today!

Psalm 103:2-3  Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits — who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.

• Holy Spirit Revelations

It was a Sunday morning church service in Anchorage. During the worship time a good brother came down from the choir to the microphone and said that he had a word from the Lord, that someone there that day needed to get saved. I inwardly thought, "That's not a revelation from the Lord. There are 1,000 people here. Of course someone needs to get saved!" How badly I misjudged!

That choir member wasn't finished. He went on to say, "And you know who you are, because before coming to church today you drank two beers." Immediately a man raised his hand in response, then went out with a couple of elders to pray and accept the Lord as His Savior. This remarkable event was one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit called "the word of knowledge". It was a divine impartation of knowledge from God in heaven to a brother who had no personal knowledge of the situation. In dramatic fashion, that divine intervention touched the heart of the man who had drunk those two beers before church, and the clear manifestation of the supernatural caused him to surrender his heart to the Lord!

1 Corinthians 12:1, 8, KJV  Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant…. [8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit.

Another remarkable supernatural outpouring by God occurred in a church service where a young evangelist was preaching. I watched him stop in mid-message and begin to give "words of knowledge" by the Holy Spirit. Under the inspiration of God, he one by one spoke 27 separate revelations of needs for healing and other issues. These were not broad, general things like "Someone has a cold." No, they were very precise and specific. Remarkably, all 27 of these divine revelations received a response from the congregation, and the people so identified by the Lord came forward to receive prayer.

• A Cabin Full of Boys Filled with the Holy Spirit

It was summer 1971, and I was a counselor at the 4th-6th grade youth campout at Chugach Christian Camp. After a good evening service, we returned to the cabin with our boys. We sensed that the Holy Spirit was preparing to move mightily. So we began to pray right there in the cabin for the boys to receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit. A few had already received that blessing. As we prayed, one after another was filled with the Spirit and began to speak in tongues. Eventually about 20 boys that evening received that mighty anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:5, 8; 2:1-4  [Jesus said to them] "…in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit…. [8] you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…." [2:1] When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place…. [4] All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

During that outpouring of the Spirit on those boys in the cabin, I had been praying for one boy who could not seem to break through. Although I knelt and prayed with him and gave him some Scriptural instruction, nothing happened. Then the Lord gave me a supernatural insight by the spiritual gift called "discerning of spirits". He showed me a demon speaking into the boy's other ear and contradicting whatever biblical encouragement I was giving the boy. Now equipped with this revelation from the Lord, I leaned across towards that demon and commanded him to flee in the almighty name of Jesus. Then I returned to praying for the young man, and he was soon filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:8-10  To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits [KJV: discerning of spirits], to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

• Warnings by God of Imminent Danger

I was about to pull out of a parking lot, making a right turn into the first traffic lane going in my direction. Naturally, the danger then would be coming from my left. But I felt a sudden, strong compulsion to pray in tongues at that very moment. I did so, with great urgency. On full alert, I pulled up slowly to the edge of the traffic lane that I had been about to enter. And there, coming from the right, directly down my lane, the wrong way and at high speed, was another car passing someone illegally. I thanked God for intervening in this situation that could have been catastrophic for me.

• My pastor in Alaska told me of a similar divine intervention that happened to him. He was driving his car and approaching an S-turn in the road ahead. Suddenly he pulled over abruptly onto the shoulder, and immediately a car came out of the S-turn heading the wrong way down the lane my pastor had just vacated. His astonished passenger asked, "How did you do that?" He replied, "The Holy Spirit told me to pull over."

Psalm 91:9-11  If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

• "Grammie's" Cataracts Healed

Many years ago my beloved grandmother developed cataracts in her eyes that were impairing her vision. My wife and I visited her one day and talked to her about divine healing. Although she had been a born-again Christian since age 13, Grammie had not been taught to expect healing from the Lord. Well, her faith rose, and she allowed us to pray for her. Shortly afterwards, we took her to the follow-up appointment with the ophthalmologist who had diagnosed her cataracts. When she came out of his office, Grammie happily told us that the doctor had said, "I may have told you that you had cataracts before, but you sure don't have them now!" God had faithfully touched and healed this elderly woman who had dared to believe God for her healing!

Matthew 8:16-17  …[Jesus] healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

Matthew 8:2-3  A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.

• Four Demons Cast Out

We received a call to come quickly. A Christian brother was with a woman who was clearly demon-possessed. My wife and I arrived and saw that she was rambling, incoherent, and trying to strangle herself in our presence. At the mention of the name "Jesus" she shrank away from us in outright terror. We began to pray for her deliverance, but saw no victory after several hours. She was still suicidal and coming in and out of sanity. So I said, let's stop and seek wisdom from the Lord. We did so, and the Lord was faithful. He spoke to my spirit clearly these words: "She believes that she has committed the unpardonable sin." So I spoke to the woman and said, "[Her name], you have not committed the unpardonable sin." Immediately a voice came back through her mouth and said, "Yes, she has!" Paydirt! We now had the revelation that the demons were holding her captive by her believing the lie that God would never forgive her. So we spoke again to the demons and rebuked them in Jesus' name, commanding them to come out. One after another, four demons came out. When the final one departed, the young woman came back to instant sanity. We quickly led her to salvation in Jesus Christ. Then we prayed, and she received the baptism with the Spirit and spoke in tongues. She was laughing and crying with joy, saying, "This is what I've always wanted." And she was in church the next Sunday.

Luke 10:17  "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."

Mark 16:17  …these signs will accompany [will follow: NKJV] those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons

In closing, let me emphasize that these supernatural phenomena are not to be confused with the often bizarre, unedifying, and frequently occultish manifestations of what some call "the paranormal". No! The testimonies I have shared are Scripturally sound illustrations of God Almighty stepping into the lives of His people for healing, miracles, and a host of other supernatural blessings.

He did these things for me; He will do them for you and for all who look to Him with faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. Expect great things from God — He loves you!
