Pastor Jim's Personal Perspective

After more than 50 years in Pentecostal ministry, I remain convinced that reaching lost people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ is one of the highest callings God has given His Church. Evangelism is not merely a program for churches or the work of specially called evangelists. Jesus calls all His followers to be His witnesses.

Our message must always center on Jesus Christ — His death on the cross for our sins, His resurrection and ascension back to heaven, His call to repentance and faith (Acts 20:21), and the eternal life He gives to those who believe in Him. And Jesus did not intend us to carry out this Great Commission in our own strength. He promised His followers the power of the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses.

Over the years I have seen that God can use a sermon, a personal conversation, a prayer, a Scripture shared with someone, a personal testimony, or even an unexpected encounter to plant the seed of His Word in a person's heart. Our part is to faithfully proclaim Jesus, pray for the lost, sow the Word of God, and remain open to the Holy Spirit's leading. God is the One who brings the harvest.

In my case I came to faith in Jesus primarily through the personal testimony and Christlike example of a young Christian lady. She later became my wife of 38 years and is now with the Lord in heaven, where I'll see her again one day and thank her for sharing the saving Gospel of Jesus with me.

Biblical evangelism is sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with people who need salvation. It centers on Jesus' death for our sins, His resurrection, repentance toward God, faith in Jesus Christ, and the eternal life He gives to those who believe.

Is evangelism only the responsibility of pastors and evangelists?

No. Although God gives some believers a special ministry as evangelists, Jesus calls all His followers to be His witnesses. Every Christian can share Christ through personal testimony, conversations, Scripture, prayer, acts of love, and other opportunities God provides.

Why is the Holy Spirit important in evangelism?

Jesus promised His followers that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses. Biblical evangelism therefore depends not merely on human ability or persuasion, but on the Holy Spirit empowering believers and working in the hearts of those who hear the Gospel.

Share what Jesus has done in your own life, speak naturally about your faith, offer an appropriate Scripture, pray for opportunities, and remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading. Even a brief conversation or personal testimony can plant a seed that God later brings to harvest.
