IN SHORT: When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He was announcing that His saving mission was fully completed. By His death, burial, and resurrection, He secured forgiveness of sins, healing, deliverance from the devil’s power, eternal life, and more for all who turn to God in repentance and have faith in the Savior Jesus. Nothing remains to be added to His work—only to be received.

In the Bible’s four Gospels Jesus is revealed as the divine Son of God whom God the Father sent from heaven to earth to “
Christ lived on earth for several decades and shared with His hearers the redeeming truths of God. Then He died an excruciating death on a Roman cross as the Supreme Sacrifice for our sins, taking upon Himself the punishment due to all our sins (Isaiah 53:6). On the third day He rose from the dead and shortly after ascended back to heaven, having secured our redemption, and sits to this very day at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. In brief, this is “the gospel” which the Bible reveals about Jesus: “Christ died for our sins … He was buried … [and] He was raised on the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
In His dying breaths on the cross, the Savior Jesus Christ cried out, “It is finished!” and bowed His head, died, and was buried. On the third day He arose from the grave and soon after ascended gloriously back to heaven, where to this very day He offers eternal salvation and more to those who will come to Him in faith and repentance. His redemptive purpose in coming to earth was successfully completed, as He assured us in His final words on the cross: “It is finished!” Now it’s up to
Jesus Himself knew that His great mission on earth was to “seek and to save the lost.” How did He do that? The apostle Peter answers that, saying that Christ bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. Jesus died and rose from the grave to save us lost sinners! He accomplished (“finished”) all that was needed to reconcile us estranged sinners back to God Almighty.
He did that! Now our part is to turn to God in sincere repentance for our sins and to have devoted faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Salvation from Jesus is not to be viewed as just a “fire escape” from a very real hell. No, it’s far more than that. As the apostle Peter wrote, Jesus bore our sins “so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness.”
While on earth Jesus healed all the sick who came to Him in faith for healing. And that was not just for those first-century believers. His healing is also for 21st-century believers, because Jesus Christ (the Healer) is the same today and forever. He will always be the source, the provision, of divine healing.
Let me add here a powerful testimony of Jesus’ healing power. Remember, all that He had to do to provide this for us was accomplished 2,000 years ago — “It is finished!” More that 50 years ago I married a dedicated Christian woman. We both wanted children, but she was soon diagnosed with a medical infertility. We were childless for 6 long years. Then a godly lady in our church told us that the Lord had told her to tell my wife from the Lord: “Your barren days are over!” The Lord was faithful, and the following year my wife bore us the first of four children — all adults now and serving the Lord with their families. “The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich!”
God was faithful to my wife and me. Through Christ’s finished work, we experienced God’s promise: “I am the Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26; see also Psalm 103:2-3). And that same Lord Jesus extends His healing power and promise to you!
These verses speak of a broad range of blessings from Jesus’ finished work. He came to destroy the devil’s work, and He succeeded! In Christ there is healing, both physical, mental, and emotional (“the brokenhearted”). There is deliverance from bondages you may be struggling with: alcoholism, pornography, a vicious temper, or other things that hold you captive.
He will “set at liberty” those who come to Him in faith. Perhaps you have a life-dominating sin. There’s liberty in Jesus! Or maybe you have deep, serious hurts from something that happened to you, perhaps even long ago, and you can’t seem to be healed of them. There’s liberty and liberation in Jesus! Do you feel ongoing spiritual warfare against you by the devil? Jesus came to “destroy the devil’s work.” There’s liberty in Jesus.
God loves us dearly! Because our sins had separated us from Him, out of His love He sent Jesus His Son from heaven to earth to live, minister, die for our sins, and rise again. All who come to Jesus in faith and repentance (Acts 20:21) will find eternal life. At His prophesied Second Coming Jesus will raise the deceased faithful believers of all the ages. And together with them He will catch the living believers in Him up to meet the Lord Jesus in the air as He comes back to earth. He will instantly transform all the resurrected/caught up believers into glorious, incorruptible, immortal bodies (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; see also 1 Corinthians, chapter 15). And we will live forever in the indescribably glorious presence of God the Father and Jesus His divine Son.
All these blessings (and more!) are made available to you by the finished work of Jesus Christ in His death on the cross, His burial, and His rising from the dead to return to heaven. From that heavenly home He graciously grants these great blessings to all who choose to follow Him in your life on this earth.
--------------------
Where in the Bible did Jesus say "It is finished"?
• Jesus said it in John 19:30, while dying on the cross
What did Jesus Mean When He said "It is finished"?
• He meant that His saving, redemptive work was fully completed, and soon proven by His resurrection from the dead and ascension back to heaven. Nothing more needs to be done by Jesus to secure forgiveness and salvation for us.
Does "It is finished" mean I don't need to do anything?
• It means we cannot add to Christ's work, but we must respond by turning to God in repentance and placing our faith in Jesus Christ.
What blessings come from Jesus' finished work?
• Scripture includes such blessings as salvation and forgiveness of sin, deliverance from Satan's power, the baptism with the Holy Spirit and power, God's transforming help for holy living, and eternal life. There are many more found in a full reading of the New Testament.
Does Jesus' finished work include divine healing?
• Definitely. Jesus healed multitudes of sick and infirm people during His earthly ministry, and the Bible presents Him as "the same yesterday, today, and forever."
How can I receive what Jesus finished for me?
• Come to God sincerely in faith, repent of sin, trust Jesus Christ fully as Lord and Savior, and prayerfully present your needs to Him.
I’m confident that God has spoken to the hearts of many today. Some may realize that you’ve never made a true commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ and are feeling God’s tug in your soul. This is your day, the most important day of your life. Jesus is lovingly awaiting your commitment to Him. He’ll become your Lord, your Savior, your Deliver as needed, and more. And you’ll see Him immediately in heaven when you draw your last breath on this earth. I received Jesus into my life and my heart 56 years ago, and I have not regretted that decision a single day since. As I encourage fellow believers to say to others: “I got Jesus in my life, and everything changed.” And beyond this life, we get the indescribable privilege of going on to heaven and the Lord’s awesome presence.
If God is speaking to your heart today, I encourage you to let the late, respected evangelist Billy Graham lead you in a prayer for salvation at his webpage Peace with God. You’ll be eternally grateful to God if you do. God bless you!
