25 Bible Verses About the Power of the Cross

The cross of Jesus Christ stands at the very center of the Christian faith. Through His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, Jesus accomplished what no one else could ever accomplish. He bore our sins, reconciled us to God, defeated Satan, opened the way for healing and transformation, and secured eternal life for all who place their faith in Him.

The Bible contains many powerful verses that reveal the meaning and benefits of Christ's sacrifice. In this study we will look at 25 Bible verses about the power of the cross. These verses show that the cross is far more than a historical event. Through the cross, God demonstrated His love, provided salvation, broke the power of sin and death, and opened the door to a restored relationship with Him.

To make this study easy to follow, the verses are grouped into six major themes: The Cross Saves, The Cross Heals, The Cross Reconciles, The Cross Defeats Satan, The Cross Changes Lives, and The Cross Brings Eternal Life.

As you read these Scriptures, look carefully at what God Himself says about the power of Jesus' cross. May these verses strengthen your faith, deepen your appreciation for Christ's sacrifice, and draw you closer to the Savior who loved us and gave Himself for us.

1. The Cross Saves

1 Corinthians 1:18  For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

The cross of Jesus Christ brought to us the eternity-changing, saving power of God.

Romans 5:8-9  …While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

Because of the death of Jesus on the cross, we are justified by His shed blood and put in right standing with God, now saved from His wrath against sin.

Romans 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.

The “gospel” — the Good News about Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) is God’s powerful way of bringing us a salvation that we cannot gain otherwise.

Colossians 1:13-14  For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Through the cross of His Son, God has redeemed us from the dominion of darkness and placed us into the wonderful kingdom of His Son Jesus.

1 Pet 2:24  He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness…

It was on the cross that Jesus made the supreme sacrifice, taking on Himself our sins and the penalty due to them, so that we may begin to live a righteous life in God’s eyes.

2. The Cross Heals

Isaiah 53:4-5  Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering … [5] and by his wounds we are healed.

The prophet Isaiah prophesied 7 centuries before Jesus came to earth that He would experience the wounding and killing of His body in order to take our pain and suffering.

Matthew 8:16-17  When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” [See Isaiah 53:4-5 just above]

While on earth Jesus healed the sick multitudes, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy that He would take up our infirmities and bear our diseases. And Jesus is the same today as He was back then (Hebrews 13:8).

1 Peter 2:24  “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

It was in His agonizing death on the cross and the painful hours just before His death that Jesus once and for all secured for us healing by ‘His wounds.’

Psalm 103:2-3  Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.

Even back in pre-cross times God has always been One who desires both to forgive our sins and to heal our diseases.

3. The Cross Reconciles

Colossians 1:20  …and through him [Jesus] to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Through His blood shed for us on the cross, where He took upon Himself our sins, Jesus reconciled sinful mankind back into a holy relationship with the holy God. Christ’s death and resurrection overcame our separation from God due to our unforgiven sins.

Romans 5:10  For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Men and women are lost in sin without Jesus. But His death has reconciled us to God and has brought us into a forgiven, saved relationship with Him.

Ephesians 2:13-16  But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ… [16] and in one body to reconcile both of them [Jews and Gentiles] to God through the cross.

No one is left out. Whether we are Jew or Gentile, the shed blood of Jesus is sufficient to bring us into a saved, personal relationship with Him and God the Father, if we will trust in Jesus and repent of our sins (Acts 20:21).

2 Corinthians 5:18-19  All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.

In this reconciliation to Him, God receives repentant, faith-filled believers who come to Him through Jesus Christ — the only “way, truth, and life” (John 14:6).

------------------

4. The Cross Defeats Satan

Colossians 2:15  And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

All spiritual enemies of God — particularly Satan and his demon hordes — have been conquered when Jesus “triumphed over them by the cross.”

Hebrews 2:14-15  Since the children have flesh and blood, he [Jesus] too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Christ’s death on the cross broke Satan’s power, including his power to hold people in slavery by their fear of death. And Jesus has empowered us to overcome demons in His name.

Revelation 12:11  For the accuser [Satan] of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb

In that Revelation 12 battle in the heavenlies between God’s forces and Satan’s forces, those on God’s side triumphed through the blood of the sacrificed and risen Lamb of God, Jesus.

1 John 3:8b  The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

That one short verse says it well. Jesus came to destroy the devil’s work. Believe that!

5. The Cross Changes Lives

Galatians 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The repentant person turning to God through Jesus is said to be “crucified with Christ.” From that faith encounter, the new believer has Jesus Christ living in him and enabling him to live a godly, faith-empowered life for the Lord.

Romans 6:6  For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.

In that spiritual ‘crucifixion’ that we experience we partake of the benefits of Jesus’ cross and are enabled to “no longer be slaves to sin.” It’s now possible to live a holy life.

2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Now being in Christ, you are a new creation in Him. He took your sins on the cross and your old self has passed away and your new self is born again (John 3:3-7) to serve the Lord and live for Him joyfully.

Titus 2:14  …we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

One purpose Jesus had in giving Himself over to the brutal death on the cross was to redeem us to God and to deliver us from all wickedness, causing the faithful to be a purified people of His own.

Galatians 6:14  May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Put down all pride and humbly acknowledge that all the many blessings salvation has brought to you are by Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection redeeming you from the grip of the world’s evils.

6. The Cross Brings Eternal Life

John 3:14-15  Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man [Jesus] must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

Jesus foretold that He had to be “lifted up” (on the cross) to enable believers in Him to have eternal life in His glorious presence.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

By sending His Son Jesus to earth — and eventually to the cross for our sins — God opened the door for all who will come to Jesus in faith and repentance to have eternal life in the presence of God the Father and Jesus His Son. All this comes from the amazing love of God for us!

Romans 5:21  …so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Not by our works, but by the wonderful grace and favor of God, all who come to God through faith in Jesus will inherit eternal life and the joyful promise that “in His presence is fullness of joy” (Psalm 16:11). And all those blessings are ours because of the cross where Jesus shed His precious blood to bring us to God and to eternal life with Him. Thank you, Jesus!
