These verses speak directly to my heart. I’ll admit that I have a tendency to anxiety, to get fretful about situations. For example, I can get anxious about our house, wondering if any of the plumbing or electrical things might go wrong. Or at age 82, I sometimes find myself anxious about end-of-life issues — not for myself, but for the well-being of my loved ones surviving me after my Lord takes me to be with Him. I could give more examples, but let’s move on to the cure, the solution.
Over the years I’ve learned that there is a way to deal with that tendency of mine to fret and worry. I turn to the promises of God’s Word, the Bible. I suggest you quickly re-read the two short verses above. In the Psalm we notice that God is addressing a common human situation —“When anxiety was great within me.” Like me, many of you frequently face worrisome situations —sometimes imagined, but often real — in your daily life. In that same Psalm, God promises that His “consolation,” His comfort, will carry us through to joy and victory.
The Proverb above accurately describes the problem — “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down.” That’s true, as many of us know by experience. But there again, God promises a solution, a cure, for that anxiety — “a good, encouraging word makes it [the heart] glad.” And that’s where I want to share with you now a good, encouraging word from God’s Word, the Bible.
This verse can change your life! It works for me, and it will for you. Let’s examine this victory-giving verse thought by thought.
First, the verse addresses the issue of anxiety in a person’s life — “Do not be anxious about anything.” Now that’s not precisely the cure; it’s the beginning of the cure. When fretting or worry besiege you, determine to be victorious over it: “I will not be anxious!” That will put you on God’s path to victory, as the rest of that marvelous verse reveals.
Whatever it is that’s causing your anxiety, realize that God has an answer, a cure for you, no matter what that situation or fretful thought is. “In every situation” (Phil. 4:6) God will help you, console you, comfort you, and lead you from anxiety to peace and joy and victory. Don’t lament and say, “But this is a tough one!” Rather, hold fast to God’s promise that there is nothing too difficult for Him (Jeremiah 32:17).
“… in every situation, by prayer…” He is a God who hears prayer — “You who answer prayer, to you all people will come” (Psalm 65:2). Go to your knees (or however you pray best) and seek God, pray to Him and look to Him as the solution to your anxiety.
Think about the Lord’s prayer as an example. In this great “Our Father” prayer Jesus told His disciples (and us) to specifically ask our heavenly Father for certain things (Matthew 6:9-13): for our daily bread/provisions; for forgiveness of our sins; for protection and deliverance from evil and the evil one, Satan. The underlying principle there is that God wants and expects us to specifically seek Him with petitions, with requests, for deliverance from our anxieties. Name the problem to Him and believe Him to give you victory over it.
Jesus taught us that in prayer we can ask God, and it shall be given to you (Mark 7:7). Present your specific requests to Him. Identify your anxiety and the cause. And specifically ask/petition God for His help to get the victory over those specific anxieties.
(“…with thanksgiving” - vs. 6). I think this is an often-forgotten aspect of prayer. If we believe, as we should, that we serve a loving God who answers prayer, then even as you pray and present your petitions to Him, right then thank Him for His love, grace, and faithfulness that will grant His answers to your prayers.
What a promise! Picture a believer having anxiety in the heart. Fretting, worrying may be besieging him or her. God’s answer in every such situation? — Pray to Him, petition Him for deliverance from specific anxieties and their causes, thank Him immediately for the assurance of His answer. And what will happen to you concerning those anxieties?
Are you anxious today? Fretting, fearful, or worrying about something? Turn to God for help. Pray to Him, ask Him to relieve your specific situation, thank Him for hearing and receive in your heart and mind the PEACE OF GOD that even exceeds all our highest hopes. God is good! He loves you. I suggest that you print out our main verse, God’s cure for anxiety (Philippians 4:6-7), and hang it up at home somewhere so that you’ll see it every day. Quote it aloud any and every time anxious thoughts come upon you. God promises to give you peace in the place of your anxieties.

Are you an anxious person? Turn to God and the promises of His holy Word whenever those anxieties enter your heart and mind. Expect God Almighty to bring you victory as you do what He has said in His word (above) for you to do. His peace will comfort and quiet your heart and its anxieties and fears. The apostle Peter sums it up well (1 Peter 5:7): "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
